Austintown at a glance
Austintown is a community of 29,594 people (2020) in Austintown Township, directly west of Youngstown. Its growth after the 1950s means a lot of similar houses, and contractors who have worked inside dozens of them know the usual layouts.
What that means for your heating
Austintown has many ranch and split-level homes from the 1950s through the 1970s, most with forced-air gas heat. Aging furnaces and original ductwork are common; see furnace repair. Basements with low ceilings can make furnace swaps a tight fit.
Interstate crossroads
Interstates 76 and 80 meet near the township, and open land along them catches snow and wind. Split-level homes can have rooms that run warmer or cooler than the rest; zoning or a ductless head helps.
Named for a judge
The township was founded in 1793 within the Connecticut Western Reserve and named for Warren resident and judge Calvin Austin. John McCollum of New Jersey became the first settler in 1794, and coal miners and their families had raised the population to 2,502 by 1880. The Austintown Log House, built in 1814, still stands. Older homes here often need ductwork help; see thermostats and air quality.
