Boardman at a glance
Boardman Township has 40,213 people (2020), a suburb directly south of Youngstown and the second-largest community in the Youngstown-Warren metro. Larger lots and cul-de-sacs south of Route 224 hold some of the township's newest homes, often with high-efficiency furnaces and two-stage AC.
What that means for your heating
Boardman is mostly postwar and later single-family homes with gas furnaces and central air. Furnace replacements and AC tune-ups are the most common calls; see furnace replacement. Many houses are now on their second or third furnace, and ductwork from the original build may be undersized for a modern unit.
Retail hub
Southern Park Mall and the busy Route 224 corridor sit at the center of a township that is still largely residential. Wide, open neighborhoods mean houses take the full force of winter wind. Families who stay for decades often replace the furnace and AC together to match them.
Orchards to suburbs
Elijah Boardman, a land agent for the Connecticut Land Company and later a U.S. senator, founded the township in the late 1790s, and it was formally established in 1806. It was farmland and apple orchards for most of the 19th century, and it's known as the home of the first Arby's. Many homes from the township's growth decades are due for system upgrades; see HVAC maintenance.
