Poland at a glance
Poland is a village of 2,463 people (2020) in eastern Mahoning County, about 7 miles south of Youngstown. Its tree-lined streets and historic district give the village a quieter, older feel than the townships around it.
What that means for your heating
Poland has many older and historic homes, some still heated by boilers and radiators. Boiler service and adding ductless AC are common; see ductless mini-splits. Larger homes on the edges of the village have modern forced-air systems.
Yellow Creek
The creek through the village shades and cools the low ground near it. Large, older homes often have heating zones that were added piecemeal over the years.
Named for a nation
Poland Township was surveyed in 1796, and Turhand Kirtland is considered to have founded the village in 1798. Jonathan Fowler built a grist mill on Yellow Creek in 1802. The name honors Poland for its help during the Revolutionary War. Century-old houses here keep their heat best with a well-tuned boiler; see boilers and radiators.
